Kidpics

Yeah, yeah, it’s been a while. As the weather gets warmer, I’m sure more photos will start cropping up on here. Outside trips are always more interesting than the kids sitting/laying in a bassinet or bouncy seat in the living room.

You would think I would know how to use this camera by now, too. I think I finally found a setting that will take reasonably clear pictures in lower light settings. It all has to do with white balance. Turn that “auto” setting off!

20Q

Berta and I were at the toy store this week, looking at, um, toys. We saw this crazy thing that I have to mention.

It’s a small orb-like electronic device. On the front is a screen made of small red lights and four buttons. The buttons are labelled Unknown, No, Yes, and Sometimes.

When you turn it on, it starts asking you questions. Usually around 20. You begin by thinking of a thing - anything - and answering the questions as appropriate. The device has an unnervingly high success rate.

Here is an example question list for the animal “Anteater”:

My new Linux rule

devilI am not entertaining comments from computer users concerning Linux that cannot objectively argue both sides. I received a comment on an old post (more than two years!) today about these things, and I can’t really believe that there is still a draw on these pests by this electric bug zapper.

Clearly there are advantages to both systems. If you’re going to present an argument for why Linux is the bee’s knees without a nod toward what Microsoft has done, then you’re going to have to explain why Microsoft operating systems reside on the overwhelming majority of desktop systems on the planet, and why Linux hasn’t overtaken it, since it’s so great.
